INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLOGY

SOCIAL DISTANCING IN A PANDEMIC

      Proprietary Lecture Notes

This week we are going to study the social effects of living in a city, a state, a country and a world currently under the threat of a biological danger, Covid-19.  Although I am entitling our study, Social Distancing, there are many other social effects that have significantly changed our daily lives in the past month.  Like writing our Journals, we will use our own social situations as a real-time laboratory to study Sociology.  I don't want to minimize the tragedy for those people who are anxious or fearful, for those people that are ill, or for those people who have died and their passing has devastated families and friends.  However, since Neanderthals lived in caves danger has always been a significant part of human life.  Despite the danger and tragedy, the rest of the semester we have a unique opportunity to study Sociology in what may be a once in a lifetime scenario.

(4) SOCIAL INTERACTION AND COGNITIVE FUNCTIONING

People are embedded in social interaction that shapes their brains throughout lifetime. The importance of interacting with other people is evident for human cognition, development, and well-being.  We are shaped by other people and crave for social contacts to the extent that isolation is used as punishment and even as torture. Social isolation and loneliness are risk factors for increased mortality.
